The good, the bad, and the ugly ... and Morricone

Universally acclaimed, legendary film composer Ennio Morricone whose work includes over 450 film scores including Once Upon a Time in America, The Mission, The Good the Bad and the Ugly, and Cinema Paradiso is set to perform two intimate, rare UK concert performances at the London Hammersmith Apollo Theatre, Friday the first and Saturday the second of December 2006.

Savory little Brazilian breaks

Just round the corner from my flat is a little place called Coffee Café. No, not a very original name, but the owner’s intent is well conveyed. However, in my opinion a better name might be Coxinha Kitchen.

As the green and yellow colour scheme of the café’s signage connotes, Coffee Café is Brazilian owned and run. In addition to a good cup o’ joe and your run-of-the-mill sandwiches and other lunch items, the two incredibly friendly Brasileiras that work behind the counter and in the kitchen serve a variety of homemade pastelzinhos. Among these treats is one tempting morsel that deserves at least a few sentences about it: the coxinha.

Coxinha is Portuguese for “little thigh” and refers to a spicy ball of minced chicken meat, in the shape of a chicken leg, that’s deep-fried in a wheat flour batter. Sound good? Well, it tastes even better, and just knowing that these yummies are fresh and available and virtually right outside my building’s door is awfully tempting.

Coffee Café is located on Compton Street between St John Street and Goswell Road.

A great review of Scotti's Snack Bar in Clerkenwell

I had been meaning to write a review of Scotti's Snack Bar, a great little place near my flat that exudes a phenomenal atmosphere that, if distilled, would probably taste like HP's Brown Sauce (and that's a good thing). However, when I came across the following review, I realized that someone else had already written what I intended.

Very Nearly Almost Issue One

Limited to only 120 copies, Very...Nearly...Almost is a "photozine full of pretty pictures of vandalism." The free zine is hand numbered and only available at Best, Bond, Stussy, and Boxfresh. According to the zine's corresponding blog, Issue 2 is "already in the pipeline."

I got #43.

Free Wicker Man with every purchase

Before (or perhaps instead of) catching the Nick Cage remake of the classic film, The Wicker Man, why not just purchase a copy of today's Guardian newspaper (Wednesday 6 September), which comes with a free DVD of the original?



Besides, I very seriously doubt the new film will have anything as saucy (or goofy) as Brit Ekland shakin' her thang in throes of Pagan lust.


Yep, I got mine! And, nope, I don't normally read the Guardian, but I must admit I found the following article about The Wicker Man remake to be hilarious.

Power & Taboo explores the power of the gods in the Polynesian islands of the eastern Pacific. Displaying part of the British Museum's remarkable early collections from this region, and illustrated with images made in the early part of European settlement (1760-1860), the exhibition investigates Polynesian ideas about the gods and how to manage their powers. Many of the objects have had a lasting influence on 20th Century artists such as Pablo Picasso and Henry Moore. Lectures, films and events, which tie in with the themes of the exhibition, will begin later this month.
