Best of Londonist's "What's for Lunch?" 2007

Here's a final 2007 What's for Lunch? post for Londonist. Stayed tuned for subsequent instalments in 2008 on Tuesdays around noon.

What was for Lunch in 2007
by Chris Osburn
Londonist
December 25, 2007

Overall, the 2007 London lunch scene provided us with an abundance of exceptionally good dining options. Indeed, the vast majority of our lunchtime destinations received a rating of 7 (out of 10) or higher and only two spots came in with a below 5 rating. Seven eateries tied for the year’s best, each with a rating of 9.5. Although not technically all East Enders, they are quite coincidentally all located east of center.

London Slow Food Christmas Market at South Bank

A Good, Clean, Fair, and Slow Christmas Food Market
Chris Osburn
Londonist
December 21, 2007

With this season’s frenetic pace quickening with the passing of each day till the Twenty-fifth, Londonist genuinely appreciates Slow Food London’s mellowed and delicious approach to “good and clean and fair” Christmas shopping. Located immediately outside South Bank’s Royal Festival Hall (on the non-riverside Belvedere Road bit), the Slow Food London Christmas Market commenced yesterday and continues through Sunday, from 11am to 8pm each day.

The
Slow Food organisation is an international movement that believes our food should taste good, be fair (i.e. the producers should not be exploited) and also be clean without any negative effects on the environment. The Christmas market was just one of the initiatives the organisation has organised to promote their message, and it was a great opportunity to see just how great ’slow food’ can be as well as pick up a few last minute presents.

... once dreams come true they do not always turn out the way we hoped to - and how difficult it all can be and will be and the idea of what happens when parents leave the room and we are left alone with the monsters under out beds and the ghosts on the ceilings and the whispers in the closet?

Interview: Herakut - Mutual Appreciation
Words and photos by Chris Osburn
Juxtapoz
Tuesday, 18 December 2007

Herakut, the girl/boy German collaborative graffiti team of Hera and Akut, is as unlikely a "crew" as ever you're apt to meet. By the time he was fourteen, scruffy and self-taught Akut was already painting in the streets while graceful and tidy Hera was in the midst of her ten years of a stringent technical arts education, to which her work is more of a reaction than a reference.

Londonist asks "What's for Lunch?" Betjeman’s

Here's another What's for Lunch? post for Londonist. Stayed tuned for subsequent instalments on Tuesdays around noon.

What's for Lunch? Betjeman’s
by Chris Osburn
Londonist
December 18, 2007

Across the street from celebrated Club Gascon (with a list of accolades out its coulis) and hardly more than a belly roll from “nose to tail” gastro-fiends St John Smithfield, wine bar and restaurant Betjeman’s holds its own. And what a relief. Unlike Gascon and St John, Betjeman’s takes it easy on the sumptuous as well as on the prices (although it still ain’t cheap). Named after Poet Laureate,
Sir John Betjeman (the premises were once his home), Betjeman’s is simply good.

Christmas Pie and Gingerbread Lattes at Eat

Eat. Christmas Pie. Drink. Gingerbread Latte.
by Chris Osburn
Londonist

December 6, 2007

Eat’s roast turkey, cranberry sauce, chestnuts and juniper berries pie is tasty and substantial and a little ‘home for the holidays’ in a box. It’s also an excuse to say you ate juniper berries at lunch. Couple your pie with a gingerbread latte (aka a little ‘home for the holidays’ in a cup) and you’ve got a Yuletide choir singing “Good King Wenceslas” in your mouth.

Steer Clear of Streetcar!!!

Streetcar has made my life miserable on two distinct occasions. The first time, they cancelled my booking for no apparent reason at midnight (with no one for me to contact) the night before I was to need one of their cars early in the morning. That morning, they gave me a total run around and I got the very strong sense the person I talked to was either completely incompetent or lying (his story kept changing and changing). Basically, they wasted several hours of my Saturday morning and almost ruined my plans that had been set for weeks. I ended up hiring a car from another service and, although it was much more expensive than Streetcar’s advertised prices, everything went smoothly and I will use them again (instead of Streetcar).

The second time they screwed up was today. I was sitting in my study doing some work when I got a text that my Streetcar booking for tomorrow had been confirmed. What? Huh? I had not even contacted them at all for months. So I texted, emailed and called them to cancel and to explain that I had not booked a car in the first place. That process of correcting their mistake wasted about a half hour of my time. Then, I get a text message that said my booking was changed to a different day. Eventually, they worked out whatever error they’d made. Messing up on something that I booked is bad enough but when they start randomly confirming bookings that I hadn’t even made and wasting my time without me initiating contact … well, that’s when it’s time to cancel my membership, which I’m doing right after I post this review. Waste of time! Glitch central! And seemingly a logistics nightmare!

Invisible Art Club Interview for Whitehot Magazine

Chris Osburn Interviews the Invisible Art Club
Chris Osburn
whitehot magazine of contemporary art
December 2007

The Invisible Art Club is a group of individuals with a shared love of art. Our common link is a connection to graffiti and street art. From graf writers who started 20 years ago and are still going strong, to artists who have hung up their spray cans and moved on to other mediums to artists from a more traditional background who simply happen to hang out with a lot of street artists. With our wide range of influences and experience, we bring fresh styles and perspectives to the print world.
