Tapas Fantasticas

I had a pretty awesome time yesterday strolling round the Tapas Fantasticas event at the Old Truman Brewery. It was a great way to spend a sunny Sunday afternoon (especially considering that afterward I went home to watch Spain trounce Germany in the Euro final). Here are links to my Londonist review and to my Tapas Fantasticas photo set on Flickr.

An array of flamenco dancers (on and off stage) mixing with the throngs of Brick Lane hipsters added an extra touch of spice to this vibrant event, the likes of which we very much hope to see return next year!

... bargains, goodies and
new takes on age old products were to be found. Londonist was pleased to leave the park with a big bag of Madeleines bought from the Bonne Maman stall and made note to check out restaurant Snazz Sichuan, which served up some proper heat at reasonable prices.

Brilliant. With the
price of rice and other commodities at all time highs and London ranking as the world’s most expensive city for dining out, oriental cuisine producers Amoy have decided to introduce the world’s most expensive spring roll at its Amoy Experience Stage during this weekend’s Taste of London Food Festival.

Lamenting the Loss of Bubba's

The other day I cut through Spitalfields Market and it hit me - no more Bubba's. Bubba's was one of my favourite restaurants in London and where I chose to spend Thanksgiving when I wasn't headed back to the States. I'm bummed. The New Old Spitalfields Market looks like it's gonna be too squeaky clean and homogenized for my tastes. Although, I am withholding judgement until I can properly explore the market.

Here's a post from another blog that I just came across, discussing the 'sterilization' of Spitalfields:

More than the people, though, the spaces have changed. As I've said, half the market's gone, although the shell of it around the edges has been retained. The businesses there haven't, though; the family-run pizzerias replaced by SF-based chain makeup stores and expensive Soho bakeries. The worst, though, is that even inside the old market, the character has been almost entirely sterilised away.

Qype at Tsuru

Qype did right by a few of their fave bloggers, taking us out to Japanese restaurant Tsuru for an evening featuring a range of dishes each matched specifically to Akashi Sake or Tokiwa Shochu. Here's the low down.

The drunkeness hit us like a sledgehammer wrapped in cloth. After about three very small glasses, you think - "Hello I've only drunk three glasses and this stuff hardly tastes alcoholic - so why do I feel like dancing on the ceiling". Trouble is the alcoholic content ranged from 14% to 19%.

The location and food were provided by
Tsuru. It’s a relatively new Japanese restaurant nestled into a business area just behind the Tate Modern in Southwark. It’s a cozy spot, and they made some incredible food. Click that link to see my (and others’) thoughts on the food; in short, it was excellent. I’m definitely planning to go back, probably to try some katsu curry.

So imagine my relief when we found Tsuru nestled in amongst it all. For anyone thinking Japanese food consists of sushi and soba think again. Our hosts Tsuru restaurant with Akashi-Tai Sake Brewery created an evening of Japanese joy that would make the hardest amongst you melt. We enjoyed a 5 course feast with sake pairing.

Learning, eating, and drinking. Three of my all-time favourite things! All being done at the same time! Brilliant! I was happy as clam, so happy I could almost hear the Sound of Music soundtrack streaming in the distance…either that or I was subconsciously humming it to myself… possible, and scary in retrospect.
