Last night found Londonist sampling canapés and cocktails at an outdoor medieval setting deep in the City of London. Hosted by the makers of Tanqueray gin and toptable.co.uk,” the first of two Tanqueray Tables events in London (there was an initial Tanqueray Tables night in Edinburgh last week) offered an excellent opportunity to check out the historic Merchant Taylors’ Hall.

Cook, Eat & Run at L'atelier des Chefs

Yesterday, I found myself cooking pastasotta at the newly opened L'atelier des Chefs near Oxford Circus. I really enjoyed it and am thinking about going back soon (especially since there's a twofer deal going on until the end of August!). Here are my write-ups for Londonist and Qype does London.

Making L’atelier’s recipe even more savoury, Cook, Eat and Run workshops are being offered at 2 for 1 until the end of August. £9 per person for a nice lunch date sounds like a generous portion of fun and midday decompression. Plus, you get to learn how to make - and then eat - something yummy … and not even have to clean up after yourself!

I showed up at 12.15, met some cool folks, with whom I made a very tasty pastasotto under the friendly, patient and expert guidance of a top-notch chef, had a quick convivial lunch and then went merrily on my way, leaving our mess to the professionals.

Unchained Interview (Londonist)

Londonist Interviews … Unchained
by Chris Osburn, Food & Drink Editor
Londonist
July 9, 2008

We’ve just recently come across
Unchained, a super cool and incredibly handy lil London-based website 'designed to help people find the very best Unchained shops’ in the London. By 'unchained' they mean businesses owned and run 'by real people with a passion for what they sell,' and let’s face it: those types of businesses are sadly becoming fewer and farther between at too rapid a rate. Here’s our interview with Dave Birss and Lea Simpson, two of Unchained’s three founders. We applaud their vision and look forward to any future tips they might provide us on living a more chain-free life in London.

... consider a kinda-sorta rendition of the best of American road food at the newly opened
Diner in Camden, where two quid for a proper cup of filter coffee with FREE refills had us whistling Dixie on a recent visit. The juicy California burger (essentially a cheeseburger with Monterey Jack and Guacamole) struck a nice chord as well, and the chilli cheese fries were equally wonderful in some musical metaphor way.

Friday night’s Burlesque Soirée at Kensington’s Gore Hotel - featuring the exceptionally lovely Miss Polly Rae and her naughtily coy
Hurly Burly Girlys - was brassiere loads of fun and well worth the £39 cover (which got ya in the door drinking a cocktail and enjoying a three course meal with coffee all while Miss Polly, Betsy Bon Bon, and Miss Laurie Hagen entertained). Good stuff!

Chris Osburn Interviews Stormie Mills (whitehot)

Chris Osburn Interviews Stormie Mills
by Chris Osburn
whitehot Magazine of Contemporary Art
July 2008

Tenacity, humility and belief in the creative process. Think about what you do and make it your own. Following a small component of what you do with the materials you have available may well become a significant component of your work rather than just a nuance. Work hard. It's got to be an obsession, a driving passion. A friend Reg Bolton told me, when I was having a major crisis of direction and confidence, "love what you do, do what you love, the money will follow" for me that's been good advice.

Chet Zar's Ugly American @ Strychnin Gallery
by Chris Osburn
whitehot Magazine of Contemporary Art
July 2008

There is no question about it - creating your own artwork for your own exhibition is the best. Nobody is standing over your shoulder and telling you what to create and the success or failure of a show rests entirely on your own ability. Fine art is all about freedom for me and being a cog in the machine on the films of other people is a lot less fulfilling and does not offer much freedom. Once in a while you get to work with a director who actually respects your art (Guillermo Del Toro or Adam Jones on the Tool videos, for example) and lets you really be part of the creative process.

Living in Clerkenwell can feel as if I’m living in the heart of London: a thirty minute walk from my flat finds me on Brick Lane, at Piccadilly Circus or foraging through Borough Market. Of course, with some of the best (in my opinion) pubs and restaurants in London, I’m often quite content not to venture too far a field. Still to be so central and bestowed with quality establishments, Clerkenwell is an area relatively calm, especially on the weekends.
