Heston Blumenthal Gets his Scientific Drink on with Sherry! (Londonist)

Londonist
September 30, 2008

Oh Sherry, there’s no reason to be all alone anymore! “Culinary alchemist” Heston Blumenthal (of Fat Duck fame), with scientist Professor Don Mottram of Reading University, has discovered a group of compounds known as diketopiperazines (try saying that drunk without offending someone) in Sherry. Apparently, these diketopiperazines are thought to accentuate the taste and flavour of “umami-rich” foods. In case you haven’t caught the blurps, umami is a newly discovered fifth tasting sense beyond sweet, sour, bitter and salty ... Photography ... from the event here.

Review: Moti Mahal Cookery Class with Wine Pairing (Londonist)

Chris Osburn, Food & Drink Editor
Londonist
September 29, 2008

Saturday morning had Londonist sitting in on a cookery class at “chic and contemporary Indian restaurant” Moti Mahal (near Covent Garden at 45 Great Queen Street, WC2B 5AA). The student/teacher ratio was low (about ten in our class). And, our teacher, head chef Anirudh Arora (aka Chef Ani) was brilliant. His guided tour of Moti Mahal’s thriving kitchen impressed us, as did his mellow yet authoritative manner while sharing his cookery skills. Indeed, the knowledge imparted was both practical (how to hold a knife, what’s the best brand of Basmati rice) to ingenious (awesome recipes and fascinating stories).

As expected plenty of London’s twitterarati (

Lots of Art, Furniture & Electronics for Sale

A friend of mine here in London has recently realized that he has "managed to build up a far bigger collection (of good stuff and junk) than he will ever be able to put on my walls/put on the floor." That means BARGAINS for the rest of us! His collection includes lithos of works by Toulouse-Lautrec, Chagall, Miro, Dali and more ... furniture by Eames, Bertoia and more ... and lots of A/V and electronics goodies. Visit my Tiki Chris Presents blog for a full list and contact details.

Why You Should Give Freebies to the Londonist Food & Drink Editor

Wow. Apparently, my Londonist review of cupcake delivery biz, faircake.co.uk, did some real good and they're all booked up on small orders until mid November. Awesome. Their cupcakes are delicious and I'm chuffed to read about a business doing so well! Oh, and in case you weren't aware ... Londonist rocks.

Thanks to Rob Hinchcliffe, UK Community Manager at Qype, for the heads up about the following Fair Cake blog post.

Last night’s

Qype Visits La Cave a Fromage

Qype took a few of its London Ninjas out for a cheese and wine tasting at the wonderful La Cave a Fromage earlier this week. Yum. Check out what folks (including me) had to say about the evening.

Cheese & Wine Tasting at La Cave a Fromage with Qype

Cheese on Qype (Timinator):
I approached this event with some mild trepidation, however: it was a cheese tasting night at
La Cave Ă  Fromage. And I, some of you will know, am lactose intolerant. Nevertheless, I wasn’t going to miss a freebie: I left the house armed with as much lactase enzyme as my pockets would accomodate.

Getting cheesy (and blaand) with Qype (Qype does London):
You know someone really cares about you when there’s wine and cheese tasting involved. It’s so much more committal than, say, a friendly chat over a cup of coffee at a cafĂ© or a pint at the pub. It’s considerably yummier too! I mean, c’mon, it’s cheese … and wine! Such an outing suggests sophistication and an appreciation of the finer things in life (ie cheese and wine).

La Cave Ă  Fromage (Being Unchained):
With literally thousands of cheese to choose from, the owner was delighted to inform us that we could try a different cheese every night for the next 75 years without running out of options.

La Cave Ă  Fromage (Food Stories):
OK, so I realised I don’t know much about cheese (apart from what I like) but hey, I’m more willing than ever to learn.

La Cave a Fromage (londonelicious):
There are a lot of options and the staff seem friendly and informative. If I should ever find myself in South Ken--perhaps before a night out at boujis, because you know I hang out there all the time--I'd drop in for some cheese.

Qype visits the cheese cave of West London (Qype*Vibes):
A dozen lucky Qypers got to taste a selection of remarkable cheeses from all over the world, accompanied by soem cracking wines and even a drop of alcohol made from whey (weird!).

Plenty of my photos from the evening are up on Qype's Flickr Photostream.

Return to Whitstable (Qype does London)

Chris Osburn
Qype does London
September 15th 2008

Although it’s only some 60 miles from London,
Whitstable seems like it’s a world away. The train trip’s scenic too. Whitstable’s train station is within walking distance of the town centre and beach - with the Pearl Fisher B&B essential equidistant between the station and the beach. I’m sure I’ll find myself back in Whitstable yet again. The delicious seafood and fresh salt air (all just a short jaunt away) are just too good.

Faircake.co.uk - Yum!

On Friday, Faircake.co.uk was kind enough to send a couple of dozen cupcakes my way ... and I'm so glad they did. Oh yeah, my cats dug 'em too (but of course, they only got to sniff the cupcakes!). Here's the scoop.

After our first skim of this handily-sized guide, we reckon Campion’s take of the London restaurant scene is as good as any (and considerably better than most). The writing’s pithy yet friendly and the listings are thorough and well organized. The tag lines accompanying each review are particularly useful for finding the right place to dine.

Café Spice Namaste, finally (Qype does London)

Chris Osburn
Qype does London
September 10th 2008

... this foodie institution has a brilliant menu which “incorporates the best of Indian cuisine with specialities and influences from all over the Asia, often, with a European twist.” Attention to seasonality ensures the freshest ingredients and, as the name suggests, every bite of a
CafĂ© Spice Namaste dish is full of flavour flavour flavour! The restaurant’s bright and airy dining area is a pleasant space too, where popping in for a casual meal or arranging a celebrative feast or business lunch are all plausible options. This place is a winner folks, a cut well above your standard curry and a worthy contender for the rank of London’s best.

Celebrating Macedonian Independence with the Queen of the Gypsies (Qype does London)

Qype does London
September 9th 2008

The event was my first BYOT (bring your own tambourine) concert, and I was much impressed with the variety of
dancing and gesticulating offered by the audience in response to Esma’s performance. Heck, I even wriggled to the music a bit too. It would have been impossible not to have danced – the steady rhythm laid firm foundation to the flittering melodies as Esma’s voice soared. The song tempos darted from frenetic to insanely frenetic, while every now and again dipping into mournful.

Buffalo Wings at Bodean’s (Qype does London)

by Chris Osburn
Qype does London
September 8th 2008

Damn straight I like Buffalo wings and as far as I know
Bodean’s is the best place in London for ‘em. The ribs and hot dogs ain’t bad either. Honestly, their wings don’t really come all that close to my favourite wings back in the States, but they more than suffice. And, every so often I even have to deal with a bout of some serious hankering for a plate of Bodean’s wings (with their extra-hot Diablo sauce please!).

Make a ROCK GOD fool of yourself (or let out your inner DIVA) at Lucky Voice
Chris Osburn

September 3rd 2008

I lost my voice and still have a creek in my neck more than 24 hours later. But I’d be happy to make a ROCK GOD fool of myself again at Lucky Voice’s
new Islington location again. What’s Lucky Voice? It’s a private karaoke club with rather plush air conditioned karaoke rooms, drinks service (just a press of the button away) and a decent list of songs (but not nearly enough AC/DC for this man’s tastes!).
