The endearingly cartoonish plaque on the endearingly wood panelled wall (just above the “5 EASY STEPS AT PAOLINA” instructions) at this quaint King’s Cross eatery reads “Voted Best Thai Café in the World!” By whom? We dunno, but probably by some sensible folks that like homey food served in a welcoming setting.

Upmarket burgers and downmarket burgers. Cheap pizza and bounteous tapas. Last month’s lunching has Londonist longing to lounge and eager for some healthy eats (especially considering the inescapable festive season’s soon to be in full swing)! So, when coming across an Evening Standard article about Indali Lounge, the so-called “healthiest curry house in world,” opening on Baker Street, we thought that’s one for us!

A sandwich board advertising “Union Burger, Chips and Coke £5” pulled us into the Hamburger Union near Angel Tube Station thinking something along the lines of “I’m hungry and I have £5.”

Of course, with Byron’s “fully traceable grass fed” Aberdeen Angus beef “sourced exclusively from select farms in Morayshire, Scotland,” aged for a minimum of 21 days for “maximum flavour and juiciness,” and “ground daily from select cuts of rump, chuck and brisket,” we don’t mind giving their burgers a few rightful props. However, we are left to ponder just how many f**kin’ cows named Angus have they got hangin’ around up there in Aberdeen (and how do you know when you’re biting into the real deal)?

Tucked away in a quiet modern courtyard just off anything but quiet Pentonville Road, Camino (like its portions) is huge. It’s an agreeable space too (as long as the kitsch-y if-you-were-in-the-perfect-tapas-bar-in-Spanish-heaven-it’d-look-like-this theme works for ya). We’ll gladly visit Camino again.

We left our recent lunch at Goodge Street Mexican pit stop, Benito’s Hat, with mixed feelings. The burrito we had was certainly better than ones we’ve had at other burrito stands in this town but had a ways to go before nearing the likes of some of our faves.

Ambling around Oxford Circus with a bit of time to kill, Londonist popped into the rustic-lite and spacious Great Marlborough Street location of “daily bread” global franchise, Le Pain Quotidien, for a late morning coffee (a massive Americano for £2.50) and ended up staying for a quick lunch (a warming bowl of Caribbean soup for £4.80). Everything was going fine (we sincerely appreciated the no pressure opportunity to spread out and linger for awhile and take advantage of the free wifi), until we asked for some tap water.

A Visit to Freightliners Farm

Londonist visited Freightliners Farm Café a couple of Saturdays ago and, despite some initial bad vibes from a gaggle of overly territorial yummy mummies, managed to find some room to sit down and enjoy a delicious lunch in a homey setting for about £18. Now, eighteen quid ain’t necessarily cheap, but we can assure you our lunch for two was a super heathy, well prepared heap of food (we had a couple of coffees too).

A couple weeks back (on one of those few sunny gorgeous September days), Londonist ambled down Hammersmith’s rather residential Queen Caroline Street, happening upon The Gate Vegetarian Restaurant. Actually we had made a lunch reservation the night before (which isn’t a bad idea but don’t be afraid to walk-in), yet were still a bit surprised by its lovely, slightly removed from the road, location (especially considering how conveniently close it is to Hammersmith Station and to the Apollo).

The kitsch-n-class dining area with your favourite Bollywood classics being screened is a fun place to grab a great lunch. Service is incredibly friendly and really we can’t think of anything negative to say about this establishment. Go. Enjoy.

This tea peddling East London greasy spoon, where the only thing more high viz than the vests of the chowing workers is the specials signage adorning the walls, is an oasis amid Hackney Wick’s industrial desert ... This is working London at its best with a dab of artistic flare dashed across it for good measure.

The place has a charming turn of the twentieth century look to it. The prices, well, have an old fashioned feel as well. Well ok, they are very cheap, especially considering the quality of the food. Our only gripe is the opening hours. If only they opened longer.

Petitou is terrifically welcoming, with its mismatched tables and chairs, and art and leaflets in equal measures covering the walls: the only BUT about the place is that it can get overbearingly crammed with ‘yummy mummies’ (+ their sprogs) on weekdays. The staff are well-informed, invariably cheerful and endlessly accommodating.

... looking for something slightly fresher then Kastner & Ovens is a fairly decent bet. They serve up two hot dishes a day (one meat and one vegetarian) alongside an array of pastries, tarts and salads. And, of course, lots and lots of cake. K&O has lots of things to recommend it for the occasional visitor. Everything is cooked fresh, the food’s of a good quality and there’s a decent range of sweet options.
