London is No Longer A Top Ten Holiday Destination for American
by Travel Editor
Cheap Flights News
August 21, 2007

the city’s lower destination ranking demonstrates the significant effect the dollar’s weakness has had on US air travel to the UK.In July 2006 London was ranked the 7th most popular destination for which deals were sought on Cheapflights’ US site. In July 2007, that ranking has dropped sharply out of the top ten destinations to 15th.

What's for Lunch? Bosphorus Kebabs
by Chris Osburn
Londonist
August 21, 2007

Apparently, the cult of kebab has many adherents, as evidenced by the many impromptu rave reviews written on index cards covering much of the wall space inside and providing a brilliant lunchtime read. One card from 2002 is signed by “Lionel the Taxi Driver” a fan of Bosphorus Kebabs for 35 years, writing that Bosphorus serves “the best food in town.” Another, among the multitude of cards, simply states that “It’s all about Bosphorus Kebabs.”

Night of the Demon at Sartorial Contemporary Art

Night of the Demon
Solo show of works by James Jessop
6 September – 3 October 2007

Sartorial Contemporary Art
101a Kensington Church Street
London W8 7LN
T: 020 7792 5882
F: 020 7792 5820

Tues to Sat 1:30 – 6:30 pm

Jessop's indulgence is a penchant for gaudy B-movie imagery and sleazy paperback covers from the sixties juxtaposed with a sense of Bronx style tagging intervention. And Jessop unashamedly appropriates, steals, 'sprays up' in his work, bringing us up close to an old Modernism still flexing its muscles a hundred years on. Modernism as it is so-called is still in its youth, Post-Modernism a conceited premature attempt at breaking away from its forebear, a failed attempt at being aloof to the labyrinth.

Golden Age of Restaurants for London?

Here's a link to a lil diddy I wrote for Londonist about a recent report about a boom in new restaurants in London.

A Golden Age of Restaurants?
by Chris Osburn
Londonist
August 15, 2007

London is experiencing a
restaurant boom. Over the past year, 158 new outlets compared to 89 closures were recorded by Harden's for its upcoming 2008 London Restaurants guide. That’s 16 new restaurants more than the former record set in 2005, opening at an annual rate of three times what it was in the early Nineties. Harden’s co-editor, Peter Harden, is so enthused by the increase he’s dubbed this point in time a “golden age for the London restaurant-goer with the restaurant scene reaching a stage which would once have seemed inconceivable.” A walk down any High Street confirms Harden’s findings.

What's for Lunch? Pogo Café

Pogo Café is a “vegan worker’s cooperative café” in Hackney. Being a vegan worker must do wonders for one’s disposition, as the smiley and soft-spoken woman that served us was possibly the nicest person we’ve come across in a long time. She also seemed to genuinely appreciate our patronage and showed sincere interest in our thoughts about our dining experience.

It's almost that time of the year again! Last year's London Design Festival was great and judging from the looks of this year's website, the 2007 event should be just as worthwhile.

MetroCab Rip Off!!!

The other day my Emiana and I took a MetroCab (London's boxier, more SUV-y looking taxis). We had several pieces of luggage with us and, with our non-British accents, the driver apparently sized us up as a couple of gullable tourists. However, he was unaware that we were in the neighbourhood where we live and were, thus, fairly knowledgable of the route to our destination. Needless to say, when we realized he was just driving around a block to milk us for an extra quid or two, I asked him to stop immediately and let us out. This was my first experience with MetroCab. I've heard similar stories about them. From here on, I'm sticking with London's traditional Black Cabs. In all the years I've relied on them, I've never had any sort of similar problem.

Hotel Chocolat Review

Londonist Reviews ... Hotel Chocolat
by Chris Osburn
Londonist
August 9, 2007

Writing for Londonist is not without its perks. A perfect example of such perkiness is an unsolicitated email we recently received enquiring where to send some sample products from
Hotel Chocolat, a self-described “British-owned phenomenon brazenly committed to real, authentic chocolate.” An eager response resulted in finding a huge box of chocolate arriving in the next day’s post. As doggedly difficult as writing an unbiased review of free chocolate may be, we’re determined to give it our best shot.

Treatment Rooms Interview

Here's an interview with photos that I conducted for Londonist with Baroness von Reichardt of the Treatment Rooms, a privately owned three-story house located in the West London suburb of Chiswick and almost completely covered in mosiac tiles.

Londonist Interviews ... Baroness Von Reichardt of the Treatment Rooms

by Chris Osburn
Londonist
August 8, 2007

Ironically, I think that if I had painted the same images onto my house rather than apply mosaic tiles, they would have been got rid of years ago. People realize that making mosaics is a labour intensive process. People that have seen the house from a distance or have only seen photos of it have told me that they didn’t realize the work was entirely made up of tiles. Whether or not people like the subject matter they give me credit for putting a lot of work into it, allowing me to get away with a lot more than if I had simply painted or pasted up my art.

What's for Lunch? Euro Coffee House
by Chris Osburn
Londonist
August 7, 2007

Based upon our visit, there’s nothing remarkable to report about Euro Coffee House. It seems to be a safe bet for anyone looking to grab a quick bite in the area. Service is friendly and prompt, and prices are sensible. Euro Coffee House is probably a more preferable option to the nearby Pizza Hut, Spaghetti House, Bella Italia (etc!) and a more practical option than the few upscale restaurants and cafés on Duke St.
