About halfway down Soho’s frenetic and cacophonous Berwick Street is a relative oasis of salubrious calm, the Beatroot Vegetarian CafĂ©. An appetizing and healthy array of vegan salads, hot food, smoothies and juices are ‘prepared with natural ingredients and lots of care’ and served cafeteria-style to the delight of health-conscious and ethically aware consumers, not to mention everyone else simply interested in a delicious ready-to-go meal sold at a commendable price.

Newly opened
Spice ‘N’ Rice, on Long Lane across from Smithfield Market, offers readymade curries, cooked fresh daily and ‘inspired by our mother’s home recipes.’ The curries are prepared with vegetable oil, not Ghee; thus, that bloated feeling so often associated with a visit to the curry house is avoided along with the extra calories and fat.

Madonna at Exmouth Market or Don't leave home without your camera!

Note to self: Always always always take your camera with you, dummy!

A lesson that's been impressed upon me many times (especially over the past year) but that I still can't seem to heed, is this: if I leave my camera at home, I'm sure to happen upon a very photogenic moment. Case in point: Friday around midday, I needed to go out to run some errands. Before leaving, I took a good long look at my camera bag, wondering if I should sling it across my shoulder for my brief outing. 'Nah,' I thought, 'I'm not going to be out that long or going anywhere interesting.'

So, I walked up to nearby Exmouth Market where I happened upon a huge crowd gathered around some vans, camera and lighting equipment, people walking around with clipboards, and ... Madonna, who was working on an upcoming film. Just a few minutes from my flat, I made a U-turn, heading back for my camera. Less than 10 minutes later, I returned to a much more mundane scene: no crowd, no vans, no clipboards, no Madonna. Oh well. Click here for some photos by some Flickr folks with a little more luck than I had.

Anyway, I took being out with the camera as an opportunity to take some shots of a couple of Banksy pieces, one of which has been getting an awful lot of publicity (like this, this and this) as being a new piece. However, I can verify that it's been there at least a year when I first noticed it. The other (the rat) seems to have fallen victim to a zealous but ineffective art collector.

We checked out the scene at today's preview, there are bargains galore, but don't expect rock bottom prices. However, do expect queues and little elbow room. Restocking will occur every day of the sale so keep hold of your entry ticket to use again. Designers include Dolce and Gabbana, Nigel Hall, Vivienne Westwood, Alexander McQueen and many more.

Chloe Early at StolenSpace

Chloe Early
Between Earth & Heaven
25th May - 24th June

A solo show by Chloe Early. Chloe Early’s paintings are an amalgamation of abstract landscape, surface pattern and figurative/representational elements. The diving figures appear incongruous, apparently unrelated to the urban landscape they inhabit. They are celebratory, a homage to freedom and self expression within the emptiness of contemporary urban landscape. Paint is applied in loose liquidy layers with a strong overall emphasis on colour and texture. Her current works are oil paintings on aluminium. Artist's Statement: "My paintings are a fictional junction between the natural and urban environments. These views are made up of many parts, bridging abstraction and landscape, a sense of place both fleeting and momentous. They play with colour and scale. The human figure appears as a diver, a small but energetic presence within the picture plane. Elements of pattern and representation appear throughout, as abstraction gives way to brief but emphatic moments of reality."

Londonist asks "What's for Lunch?"

I just started writing a weekly series for super cool mega-blog Londonist "about that most pressing of daily concerns: where to go on your lunch break." I've been a big fan of Londonist for quite awhile. So I'm quite chuffed about this opportunity to write about one of my favorite subjects for them! Check out my first post and stayed tuned for the subsequent instalments on Tuesdays around noon.

Panettone boxes hang from the ceiling, giving a festive air to the café while a Robert De Niro/Al Pachino photo collage and a mildly violent Taxi Driver poster add a sense of danger to your meal. Fast and friendly table service and a long standing self-imposed no smoking policy make this a clean and efficient choice for lunch.

Interview with London street artist, Cyclops

Chris Osburn interviews Cyclops
by Chris Osburn (with photography by Marta Abalau)
whitehot magazine of contemporary art
May 2007

I like painting on the street because there's more democracy. You can just do your thing; you don't have to pay for gallery space or be curated or any of that. You just do your thing, where you like, how you like, and then it's out there. You haven't been paid and anyone can fuck it up or be inspired on the way to work by what you've made. And, once it's up, that's it: It doesn't belong to you any more.
