Paul A Young's Fine and Innovative Chocolates (Londonist)

Paul A Young's Fine and Innovative Chocolates
Chris Osburn, Food & Drink Editor
Londonist
August 28, 2008

Recently, Paul and team were kind enough to give Londonist a tour of their Islington shop and allow us to sample the best chocolate we’ve ever tasted. Witnessing firsthand their “skill over machinery” approach (no digital thermometers, just fingers and mouths and experience) left us speechless. Of course, we must admit that we took every opportunity to cram our mouths with yummy chocolaty goodness as politely and discreetly as possible. We were similarly awed by Paul’s focus on seasonality (a Pimms and lemonade chocolate for summer? Yes!) and his use of fresh and real ingredients (no flavour syrups here – everything is made in shop, by hand). Splendid.

Scrambling Eggs: the interview (Qype does London)

Scrambling Eggs: the interview
Chris Osburn
Qype does London
August 27th 2008

If breakfast doesn’t involve a tin opener or a deep fryer then I think you’re off to a good start and the NHS will be better off too. I know its going to be a challenge to convince many Brits that there is a better breakfast than a fry up but I think that’s because there aren’t many cafes offering an attractive alternative. I know I’d prefer to eat a fry up than a plastic tasting low-fat muffin from a coffee chain store. The most important thing for me is the quality of the ingredients and knowing that the food I eat has been made with some care and imagination. In summer I love sourdough toast with olive oil, fresh tomato, basil and cracked pepper, and in winter, buttermilk pancakes with bacon and maple syrup.

Ro0ollerco0oastering at Thorpe Park (Qype does London)

Chris Osburn
Qype does London
August 18th 2008

So yesterday, a couple of my crazier friends and I ran all over
Thorpe Park - home of Samurai, Colossus, Nemesis Inferno, Logger’s Leap, Slammer, Rush, Vortex, and various other pleasure machines with names inspired by professional wrestlers – for a fun-filled day of rides, splashes, bad food, gratuitous screeching and tons more laughs than are usually summoned on an average Sunday afternoon (in my postcode anyway).

Roaming East London with Jack the Ripper (Qype does London)

Roaming East London with Jack the Ripper
Chris Osburn
Qype does London
August 13th 2008

To be honest, I didn’t think I was going to enjoy it all that much, but I was actually rather enthralled and found the walk to be informative while at the same time entertaining. The subject matter was rather gruesome and, perhaps, not suitable for many tastes and definitely not for small children … and it did seem to lean on the more sensational aspects of the Ripper murders.

My new favourite restaurant in London? Acorn House! (Qype does London)

Qype does London
August 12th 2008

Acorn House’s commitment to its ethos is impressive and commendable, especially considering how cutthroat competition in London’s restaurant industry can be ... Of course, goodwill and responsible policies aside, the fact of the matter is that Acorn House offers delicious food and phenomenal service in a lovely setting.

The House of Viktor & Rolf at Barbican (Qype does London)

The House of Viktor & Rolf at Barbican
Chris Osburn
Qype does London
August 11th 2008

What made the V&R exhibition so creepy (for me anyway), was their use of dolls, dolls and more dolls. The central feature of the show was a giant dollhouse with all sorts of cutesy dolls wearing mini-me versions of V&R’s off-kilter designs. Think Dolce&Gabbana meets Chucky. Even the life-sized mannequins used to display V&R’s clothing collections had these kewpy doll heads with giant-sized eyes. The juxtaposition of high-minded style with messed-up proportions made a real impact. I appreciated their tweaking everything to be slightly wrong and uncomfortably odd.

Essentially, the exhibition (in Barbican’s Curve exhibition space) features giant-sized opium balls, smoking implements and pipes. It’s intense and well, really sticks it to the Brits. Frolic is impressive for its size and stark and well worth a look-see. And, oh yeah, it’s free.

Cheese. You know it, you love it. A great place to learn how to love it just a little more is South Kensington’s

Coffee, Cake and Kink … and Qype (Qype does London)

by Chris Osburn
Qype does London
August 7th 2008

Coffee, Cake and Kink is a mellow and friendly little café with two levels of comfortable seating as well as some tables outside. CC&K just also happens to offer an extensive range of erotica, adult toys and hundreds of titles of books about every facet of sexuality and intimacy. Still, the only thing seedy about this place is the potential that a poppy seed muffin may be featured as a dessert. CC&K is a well lit and safe environment – very open and welcoming and nothing at all like those creepy shops all over Soho.

In fact, La Cave is such a yummiferous destination that when one of its regular customers neared completion of his Mount Everest ascent, he had one thing on his mind: sitting down at La Cave with a plate of cheese and glass of wine in front of him. Really. We saw said mountain climber’s photo and note he sent to the shop about this moment.

Fusing Takeaway and Home Cooking with XO to GO (Londonist)

Fusing Takeaway and Home Cooking with XO to GO
by Chris Osburn, Food & Drink Editor
Londonist
August 6, 2008

We were admittedly doubtful when our XO to GO order arrived at Londonist headquarters last night. Honestly, surveying the individual hermitically-sealed bags of curry, rice, noodles, et al – each with its own heating instructions – we wondered what we’d gotten ourselves into (and if we were going to have to scrounge for something else to eat)! Then, digging into our serve-cold starters of some intriguingly tasty bahn tran rolls and a sushi-filled Bento Box, we relaxed a little. Pre-heating our oven and popping open the door to our microwave, we prepared our dishes, hoping for the best.

This 18 meters high, 200 meter long walkway skirting along Kew’s canopy of sweet chestnuts, limes and deciduous oaks is super duper awesome. Designed by the architects of the

Kicking back at home over a lazy weekend of not much doing and even fewer plans has its benefits, especially when the missus makes a trip to
Gazzano’s Italian delicatessen on Farringdon Road. This place has what you need in the way of pastas, antipasti, sausages, oils, sweets, fresh breads, fizzy water … there’s even a little sandwich and coffee bar in the back which serves one of the best espressos in London. The folks behind the counter are really friendly and, honestly, the prices are usually more than reasonable.

I’m sure the Eurostar has its share of imperfections (one time about a year ago, my Paris-London train was delayed for what seemed an excruciatingly long couple of hours), but for the most part I’ve had pleasant experiences zipping through the Chunnel. Taking the Eurostar to/from any of its destinations is certainly more civilized and a lot more logistically sensible than getting to/from any airports these days!
