London: Number One City Destination

RECORD TOURIST NUMBERS BOOST LONDON'S ECONOMY
TravelPlus Blog
Wednesday, April 25, 2007

“London remains the number one city destination in the world and the latest visitor numbers confirm this. Importantly, we have increased our worldwide share of international visitor numbers. Tourism is worth around £15 billion a year to the London economy and sustained increases over time result in an increase in the number of jobs created for the economy. This is particularly encouraging in the lead up to 2012 when the tourism and cultural industries will be amongst the main economic beneficiaries from the Games.”

How was the Gilbert & George: Major Exhibition?

Shame on me. I poo-pooed this exhibition and wrote it off. I even visited the Tate Modern a few times since the exhibition started without so much as considering popping my head in to take a look at Gilbert & George: Major Exhibition. Luckily, Emiana knocked some sense into me, and we checked it out this afternoon. The show features one of the most consistent, engaging and provocative bodies of work I've come across. I was particularly impressed by the consistency of the work, considering that G&G have been at it since the late 60s. They have - without flinching - examined and exhibited their lives as art(ists) in full view of the world.

Wanna see how London, contemporary art, and social norms have evolved over the past 40 years? Gilbert & George: Major Exhibition runs until May 7, 2007.

Daddy Donkey

I've been a fan of these Mexican food street vendors for awhile now. Selfishly, I chose not to post about them for fear of longer lunchtime queues! However, now that Londonist has spilled the frijoles - and the Daddy Donkey crew has a new bigger trailer and a few more helping hands - I reckon it's time to sing the praises of these folks.

Daddy Donkey
serves burritos "packed full of fresh natural ingredients." However, DD feels the commonly recognized name of their main product is a misnomer:

That's why we call our burritos 'Burros'. The word burrito in Spanish literally means 'little donkey' which comes from the word burro meaning 'big, daddy donkey.'

American and Mexican ex-pats in London rejoice! These 'big daddy donkeys' are damn good. All you other Londoners that ain't never tried these yummies do yourselves a favor and head over to Leather Lane during the week for a superb and inexpensive Mexican grill lunch.

All Daddy Donkey burros are under £6 ... and addictively delicious.
