Strolling along Whitecross Street a few weeks ago, we happened upon a little lime green van with a chalkboard menu listing fajitas, burritos, and quesadillas for sale. Unfortunately, Simon, the bloke inside the van, was done slinging burritos for the day and wouldn’t be back for another week at which time we eagerly returned for a delish and filling chorizo burrito with hot sauce for only £5.

National Express ad campaign stinks!

Associating coach travel with smell is probably not the best idea for a National Express ad campaign. I mean, this ad reeks of sabotage or Photoshop manipulation, but apparently it's no joke.

Interview with Paul Insect for Juxtapoz

Recently, I met up with London artist Paul Insect for a few pints and some convo about Shoreditch, London street art, and his one-man show, Bullion, currently on exhibition at Soho's Lazarides Gallery.

We suppose it was inevitable that, eventually, Londonist would happen upon a substandard lunch in this sprawling metropolis. Still, it’s a pity because we really wanted to give Hackney’s
Exceline, an “eat as much as you can” East African buffet, a rousing review. Upon entering, this restaurant seemed to have a lot going for it: value for money pricing (all you can eat for five quid), a modest yet clean dining area with a homey, refreshingly non-corporate, atmosphere, and an incredibly sweet and super friendly cashier. However, soon after our visit we realized it was our gastro-civic duty to post our tale of a less than optimal meal.

What's for Lunch? Yum Yum

Upon hearing that Yum Yum, a Chinese, Malaysian, and Thai “fusion” take away near King’s Cross offered a starter and main lunch combo for a mere £4.20, Londonist got the yen for some fried rice. Duly heading over to investigate, we found this humble take away to have a slightly more upscale interior than expected (table service, nice new tables and chairs, a fish tank with lots of pretty goldfish). Our craving for fried rice was soon satiated with a piled-high plateful of
Nasi Goreng (Malaysian fried rice) preceded by a starter course of mini spring rolls, all of which indeed only cost £4.20.

Time Out
goes so far as to rank Just Falafs as its “favourite falafel place” in the entire capital. According to ye olde Time Out, JF “ticks all the right boxes” with its quality ingredients and fair-trade beverages. That’s quite a statement considering all the deep fried fava bean/chickpea balls rolling round this city. Still, we have no qualms highly recommending Just Falafs to anyone looking for a tasty, quick, and healthy lunch.

What's for Lunch? Café on the Hill

Café on the Hill looks like your bog standard London caff, which of course it is … and yet oh so much more! Taking a closer look at the pastel menu cards adorning the worn windows and walls, you’ll notice an ever changing assortment of homemade Thai curries. According to one reliably well travelled East Asian foodie, the Thai dishes at Café on the Hill are as close as one can get to proper Thai street food in this town. Certainly, the sumptuous plate of Beef Penang we devoured on our visit had a delectable and ever so slightly pungent air of authenticity.

Interview with London Artist, D*Face

Chris Osburn interviews D*Face
by Chris Osburn
whitehot magazine of contemporary art
July 2007

A spot had been spied, and the only way to hit it was around the outside of a stairwell that had steel bars, in a cage-like structure covering it. To get to the spot, you had to shimmy along the outer railings which overhung the frozen canal, then up a few flights of stairs. Fine on the way up, but coming back down with paste-covered frozen hands was another story. Climbing around and along the railings, each shimmy made my hands slip further and further downwards to the point I was hunched up in a near ball-like posture and had to take a leap of faith for the canal wall.

Overheard: Flanked by Corpo-Coffee Outlets

I had to stop, shake my head and sigh when, the other day, I heard myself saying the following to a friend whom I was to meet at Exmouth Market:

There's a Starbuck's end and a Caffè Nero end. I'll be coming from the Starbuck's end.

What's for Lunch? Sfizio Café

Panzarotti are the distant southern Italian cousins of the Cornish pasty, about the same size and with the same half moon shape. However, whereas the pasty is baked with a flaky crust, the slightly more decadent panzarotto is deep fried with a softer doughy shell. Filled with mozzarella, tomato sauce and perhaps another filling such as prosciutto or spinach, these monster-sized ravioli might be best described as a mix between a calzone and a jam-filled doughnut. Definitely not recommended for daily consumption, these heavy hitting, yet oh so delectable, gut bombs are worth the lunchtime indulgence every once in awhile, especially if you plan on skipping or having a late dinner.
