I cannot help but wonder what are the differences in culture, police training, gun laws and other factors that create such a staggering difference in statistics between two fairly similar cities? An old crim law professor of mine always said to look at the body count before anything else. I'm looking and and there's work to be done.

WANTED: Odd Photographers

The London Metropolitan Police have launched a 2008 Counter-Terrorism advertising campaign requesting members of the public to report any suspicious behaviour in confidence to the Anti-Terrorist Hotline. All well and good and I've nothing against vigilance, but one of the ads suggests that if you see an "odd" photographer you should take action and report him/her. As an "odd" photographer, I find this a bit worrying.

In the interview with the Sunday Times, Ms Smith was asked why she would not feel safe on Hackney's streets at night. She replied: "Well, I just don't think that's a thing that people do, is it, really?"
