Free Dolly Parton CD in today's paper

It's now a bit late in the day, but today's The Mail on Sunday comes with a free 12-track Dolly Parton CD. Gotta love Dolly.

Great songwriting/storytelling, a voice as pretty as a babbling brook, and all sorts of other talents: I've been a fan of Dolly all my life. So, I was pleasantly surprised to find this freebie while waiting on queue at my local grocery. It's a decent set of songs too: quality sound, live and studio tracks.

London Lost and Found: Dan's List

How was the Harry Pye exhbition?

I had an opportunity to swing over to Sartorial Contemporary Art in Notting Hill last week to check out the Harry Pye: Me, Me, Me show, and I'm glad I did. Colourful and sardonic, Me, Me, Me consists of ten new paintings, an autobiography and one hour of television. According to Harry, "I have suffered for my art and now it is your turn." The show ends soon (9 March). Sartorial Contemporary Art is open Monday to Saturday 1:30 to 6:30pm.

Images from left to right: The harder they come, Let he who is without sin cast the first stone, You're the reason my life is a mess, and Lonesome feeling.

Admittedly, this BBC article has nothing to do with London. However, I couldn't resist posting the London Bus size comparison chart - it's brilliant!

Beard Papa's in town and suddenly Oxford Street is a lot more delicious!

If someone had asked if I wanted to head over to Berwick to pick up some cream puffs, I would have declined. Similarly, had I been asked if I wanted to visit Oxford Street to check out the new Beard Papas, I would have just been perplexed.

Now, if somebody had said some of the best custard filled pastries on the planet are now readily accessible and for sale at the corner of Berwick and Oxford, I'd have said, 'Let's go!' which is just what I did when I read about the London opening of Japanese cream puff meisters Beard Papa's over at Londonist.

Love custard? Visit! This hirsute daddy makes the best I've ever tasted.

Don't live in London? Papa's got locations in California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and plenty more throughout Asia.

By the way guys, bringing home a box of these might be a nice alternative to the standard box of chocolates for Valentine's Day.

Hogarth now open at Tate Britain

Hogarth: The Artist and the City

7 February - 29 April 2007
Tate Britain

London SW1P 4RG

Social commentary so sharp it bites, Tate Britain's Hogarth exhibition has already been a complete sell out in Paris and is tipped to be the show of the year here too. (Times)

Embracing everything from the satirical to the salacious, Hogarth provides a portal to an 18th century metropolis. His luscious paintings invite us to "walk in Londo's streets, plunging into the city's smells, tastes, sights and sounds." (Guardian)

stolenspace.COM (just passing the word on)

StolenSpace, the gallery, has been around for seven years. In the brief time I've known about them, I've been impressed. Located at the back of the Old Truman Brewery, the gallery is a pretty convenient visit when idling about Brick Lane, Sunday (Up)Market, and Spitalfields on Sundays.

Recently, StolenSpace launced their website -
www.StolenSpace.com - which is "not totally finished, but she floats." They plan to update the site weekly.

So there. Even less reason to be without plans and bored in London.

Back to the Pie and Mash

... except this time I visited a new place - F. Cooke on Broadway Market (don't worry - I fully intend to pop round to my local, Clark's, soon).

I first spotted F. Cooke a few days ago while
roaming around the area and knew I'd have to return soon. A step through the door and I was transported to another time ... a time I know little about but nonetheless elicits an intense feeling of nostalgia within me.

The food was simple, ample, inexpensive and better than I'd expected. Of course, I got the pie and mash and was surprised by how crisp and delicious the pie crust was. I followed up with hot fruit pie (apple) and was again pleasantly surprised. I now wish that I had brought a few home with me for the week.

Definitely pay F. Cooke a visit, if but to sit in its stark tiled room of homey austerity and stoic charm. Try to go on a sunny day and to sit facing the window with the light streaming in. If cloudy on your visit, sit with your back to the window and admire the portrait of Diana, "the people's princess."
