Wide selection of UK beers, ciders and imported beers. Beer lists and tasting notes for the London Drinker Beer Festivals held over the past few years can be found on the Beer List page. A list of the expected beers for this years festival will be available closer to the date. Sponsored by CAMRA, this is one of the few festivals where CAMRA volunteers do the catering, priding themselves on the variety and quality of the food on sale.

The Sampler - an enjoyable alternative to other wine shops

Every once in awhile a brilliant idea comes my way that makes me think, 'I wish I had thought of that - and had had the money to do it.' The Sampler is just such an idea.

The Sampler is an independent wine shop in Islington near the Highbury and Islington Station (but not a terribly long walk from Angel either). However, unlike any wine shop I've ever visited, The Sampler has installed ten Sampling Machines around the shop, serving 25ml tasting samples. There are three chilled machines for white wine, six for red wine, and one for "Wine Icons," giving a total of 80 wines available for tasting at any time. The Sampler changes all 80 wines every few weeks. Sample prices start as low as 28p, and most are around 50-80p. Sampling is easy. According the shop's website, here's all you have to do:

1. Come to the Store!
2. Buy a smart card for £10, £20 or £50
3. Grab a tasting glass
4. Put the card into the sampling machine of your choice
5. Press the button above your choice of wine and a sample sized portion (25ml) is dispensed. (The price for each sample is displayed above the wine)
6. Try the wine
7. Spit or Swallow
8. Try another...or buy a bottle or case if you really loved the wine you just tried.

This is a fun, practical way to shop for wine in a completely unpretentious setting, where customers are left alone or consulted as they see fit ... and if you're just looking for something to do, a visit to The Sampler can be an inexpensive night out as well.

Brunch at Bank Aldwych

Recently, I enjoyed a nice leisurely Sunday brunch at Bank Aldwych and would recommend a visit to anyone looking for a quality spot for some stylish slumming. The service was topnotch. My côte de bœuf with béarnaise sauce and frites was delish. And, the pitcher of Buck's Fizz (that's a Mimosa to all you non-Brits) was a much appreciated indulgence for my table of three. A well-rounded wine list and yummy desserts were noteworthy as well. I hope to go back to sample some cocktails from its bar, where according to the restaurant's website, "100 cocktails on offer to try is always on hand."

Making advance reservations is a good idea at this conveniently situated urban brasserie nestled between the City and the West End.

Rude Boy - The Clash

Rude Boy is not a great film. However, it does have some brilliant footage of several live performances by The Clash. According to IMDB ...

Rude Boy is a semi-documentary, part character study, part 'rockumentary', featuring a British punk band, The Clash. The script includes the story of a fictional fan juxtposed with actual public events of the day, including political demonstrations and Clash concerts. Filmed over a period of years, the written dialog takes on the appearance of improvisation.

The other brilliant aspect of this film is its footage of late 1970s London (as bleak as it seems to have been). I found this DVD is good to have playing while doing other things around my flat, stopping when a particular scene catches my attention or when the band comes back on to play.

Black cab driver for 70 years!

London's longest serving black cab driver has been honoured with an award after 70 years of service.

The holy king of London pizza delivers!!!

Early last month, I wrote a review about one of my fave London restaurants, Santoré (click here for that post). Well, just recently Santoré started delivering. This, my dear friends, is fantastic news. In addition to some of the best pizza I've had outside Napoli, they deliver a good assortment of pasta dishes etc ... as well as beer, wine and cigarettes. I love it.

Though different from the hoodies and skaters he paints onto public space, these paintings are a gentle reminder that, once in a while, everyone needs to come inside. In the 1980s, Witz was also a musician involved in the downtown art-punk scene. He currently lives in Brooklyn and splits his time between making gallery paintings and street art.

London Eye celebrates 25 million with Photo Contest

The first time Emiana and I moved to London back in 2001, one of the first things we did was catch a ride on the London Eye. It was a good idea, helping us get our bearings in this sprawling metropolis and giving us a dramatic panorama of our new home. Few years on and the Eye is celebrating 25 million visitors. As part of the celebration, British Airways London Eye is hosting an online photography competition allowing the public to upload their London Eye photos to a gallery featured on their website. The winner will win some nifty prizes and have his/her photo framed and put on display at the Eye's ticket office. At the end of the competition, the submitted images will also come together to create a giant mosaic of the 135m-high observation wheel.

Dedicated to the memory of Norwegian scientist and explorer Thor Heyerhahl (featured in the Oscar winning 1951 doc screened at this event), Tron Jensen's new LP 'Ocean' is a triumph of both influence and reference for the fisherman singer songwriter. Blending blues, folk and rock, Jensen’s passionate, raspy voice plays homage to the great man. In 1947 Thor crossed the Pacific Ocean on a balsa wood raft, named the Kon-Tiki in 101 days to prove his theory that the Polynesians undertook the same feat over 1000 years before.

King Tut returns to London

When painting owls in public spaces, Dscreet aims to have passers-by feel as if they are being watched by the very paintings they notice. According to Dscreet, “Owls are like nature’s CCTV cameras … a projection of my own paranoia.” Interestingly, Dscreet’s projection of paranoia is at once cheery and stern. His owls are large and colorful. Their unflinching (and unblinking) gaze creates an eerie presence that demands attention. To see them evokes the suspicion that a magic realm of wonder exists – even amid otherwise urban landscape.
