Influenced by Ed Ruscha’s 26 gasoline stations and Joseph Wright of Derby, in these pieces Witz also references older western religious painting, where physical light was a metaphor for spiritual revelation and enlightenment.

Tapas Fantasticas

I had a pretty awesome time yesterday strolling round the Tapas Fantasticas event at the Old Truman Brewery. It was a great way to spend a sunny Sunday afternoon (especially considering that afterward I went home to watch Spain trounce Germany in the Euro final). Here are links to my Londonist review and to my Tapas Fantasticas photo set on Flickr.

An array of flamenco dancers (on and off stage) mixing with the throngs of Brick Lane hipsters added an extra touch of spice to this vibrant event, the likes of which we very much hope to see return next year!

Opening Friday February 15th, 7 pm

There’s a door, somewhere. A door that opens on a white and silent world, where every secret is kept frozen under snow and ice. There’s a kingdom, somewhere. A kingdom wherein there lives a sad little boy, waiting for some brave stranger to deliver him from his icy castle...

Phil Corbett's "Erotic Terrors of the Deep" at Bodhi Gallery on Brick Lane

Erotic Terrors of the Deep
Paintings and Prints from the Brain of Phil Corbett
25-30 January 2008
Bodhi Gallery
214 Brick Lane

It's entitled 'Erotic Terrors of the Deep' but to be honest, the show isn't really that erotic, I was just being provocative to get people in, because, as we all know, sex sells. That said, the show documents the extremely sexy denizens of the deep that live out their naughty lives deep under the sea, away from human eyes. So like I say, you're not likely to find this show that titillating. But if you're into cute, very slightly suggestive animals with dark undertones and gaudy colours than this is the show for you. Probably best to bring a tissue ...

Strychnin Gallery Interview for Whitehot Magazine

Interview with Yasha Young of Strychnin Gallery
Chris Osburn
whitehot magazine of contemporary art
December 2007

... once dreams come true they do not always turn out the way we hoped to - and how difficult it all can be and will be and the idea of what happens when parents leave the room and we are left alone with the monsters under out beds and the ghosts on the ceilings and the whispers in the closet?

Shepard Fairey at StolenSpace

His work, a mixture of parody and protest, serves to subvert the very medium to which it attaches itself. Wall paper posters adorn advertising billboards that in his own words ‘market nothingness’ while large scale posters with the simple one word message ‘obey’ stir the bewildered masses. His unique use of stencils, collage, photography and painting have led to collaborations with among others, DJ Shadow, Interpol, Smashing Pumpkins and more recently the poster art for the Johnny Cash biopic, ‘Walk the Line’.
