Tapas Fantasticas

I had a pretty awesome time yesterday strolling round the Tapas Fantasticas event at the Old Truman Brewery. It was a great way to spend a sunny Sunday afternoon (especially considering that afterward I went home to watch Spain trounce Germany in the Euro final). Here are links to my Londonist review and to my Tapas Fantasticas photo set on Flickr.

An array of flamenco dancers (on and off stage) mixing with the throngs of Brick Lane hipsters added an extra touch of spice to this vibrant event, the likes of which we very much hope to see return next year!

The Trespass Alliance: Inside Urban Art group show at Andipa Gallery signifies a shift of urban art's almost exclusive presence in East London galleries to London's more chi-chi western postcodes.

Russell Maurice's Industrial Magic and Light/Thursday Solstice exhibition is now showing at London indie retailer and collective, Goodhood. Many of Maurice's works are digital print lamps but a number of collages, screen prints, and "other curiosities" are on view as well.

... bargains, goodies and
new takes on age old products were to be found. Londonist was pleased to leave the park with a big bag of Madeleines bought from the Bonne Maman stall and made note to check out restaurant Snazz Sichuan, which served up some proper heat at reasonable prices.

Brilliant. With the
price of rice and other commodities at all time highs and London ranking as the world’s most expensive city for dining out, oriental cuisine producers Amoy have decided to introduce the world’s most expensive spring roll at its Amoy Experience Stage during this weekend’s Taste of London Food Festival.

Lamenting the Loss of Bubba's

The other day I cut through Spitalfields Market and it hit me - no more Bubba's. Bubba's was one of my favourite restaurants in London and where I chose to spend Thanksgiving when I wasn't headed back to the States. I'm bummed. The New Old Spitalfields Market looks like it's gonna be too squeaky clean and homogenized for my tastes. Although, I am withholding judgement until I can properly explore the market.

Here's a post from another blog that I just came across, discussing the 'sterilization' of Spitalfields:

More than the people, though, the spaces have changed. As I've said, half the market's gone, although the shell of it around the edges has been retained. The businesses there haven't, though; the family-run pizzerias replaced by SF-based chain makeup stores and expensive Soho bakeries. The worst, though, is that even inside the old market, the character has been almost entirely sterilised away.
