I spent a bit of this afternoon ambling round new mega-retail-mecca, Westfield. The place is massive and, if you’re not one for shopping malls, rather daunting. But as far as people watching goes, it’s gotta be one of London’s top notch spots.

Like it or not (ready or not), Christmas is on its way. Hell, it’s already paraded its way through Harrods. And like it or not, there’s a good chance you’ll be parading your way down to Harrods for some festival season elbow jabbing , gift shopping before too long as well. Magma Books on Clerkenwell Road (Qype does London)
As I said in my Qype review of this design-centric book and fun stuff shop, “I will go slightly out of my way for a few moments of eye candy browsing at the Clerkenwell Road location of Magma Books.” Yes indeed-y! In fact, it’s come to the point where I can’t even walk by the shop without poking my head inside for a quick look-see. I just love perusing the magazine stand (best selection in London?) and art books …

Asics launches new shop near Oxford Circus (Qype does London)

Anyway, yours truly was there last week for the swanky launch of Asics’ first European flagship store. It’s on Argyll Street round the corner from Oxford Circus (and mere sprinting distance from Niketown, the Puma and Van’s Carnaby Street flagship stores, and whatever other footwear flagship mega-shops that are sure to exist nearby too). It’s a nice shop, all sleek and white and design-y. Huge too. Check it out next time you’re fashion foraging in the area.

Lots of Art, Furniture & Electronics for Sale
A friend of mine here in London has recently realized that he has "managed to build up a far bigger collection (of good stuff and junk) than he will ever be able to put on my walls/put on the floor." That means BARGAINS for the rest of us! His collection includes lithos of works by Toulouse-Lautrec, Chagall, Miro, Dali and more ... furniture by Eames, Bertoia and more ... and lots of A/V and electronics goodies. Recently, Paul and team were kind enough to give Londonist a tour of their Islington shop and allow us to sample the best chocolate we’ve ever tasted. Witnessing firsthand their “skill over machinery” approach (no digital thermometers, just fingers and mouths and experience) left us speechless. Of course, we must admit that we took every opportunity to cram our mouths with yummy chocolaty goodness as politely and discreetly as possible. We were similarly awed by Paul’s focus on seasonality (a Pimms and lemonade chocolate for summer? Yes!) and his use of fresh and real ingredients (no flavour syrups here – everything is made in shop, by hand). Splendid.

Kicking back at home over a lazy weekend of not much doing and even fewer plans has its benefits, especially when the missus makes a trip to Gazzano’s Italian delicatessen on Farringdon Road. This place has what you need in the way of pastas, antipasti, sausages, oils, sweets, fresh breads, fizzy water … there’s even a little sandwich and coffee bar in the back which serves one of the best espressos in London. The folks behind the counter are really friendly and, honestly, the prices are usually more than reasonable.

We’ve just recently come across Unchained, a super cool and incredibly handy lil London-based website 'designed to help people find the very best Unchained shops’ in the London. By 'unchained' they mean businesses owned and run 'by real people with a passion for what they sell,' and let’s face it: those types of businesses are sadly becoming fewer and farther between at too rapid a rate. Here’s our interview with Dave Birss and Lea Simpson, two of Unchained’s three founders. We applaud their vision and look forward to any future tips they might provide us on living a more chain-free life in London.

With this season’s frenetic pace quickening with the passing of each day till the Twenty-fifth, Londonist genuinely appreciates Slow Food London’s mellowed and delicious approach to “good and clean and fair” Christmas shopping. Located immediately outside South Bank’s Royal Festival Hall (on the non-riverside Belvedere Road bit), the Slow Food London Christmas Market commenced yesterday and continues through Sunday, from 11am to 8pm each day.

The Slow Food organisation is an international movement that believes our food should taste good, be fair (i.e. the producers should not be exploited) and also be clean without any negative effects on the environment. The Christmas market was just one of the initiatives the organisation has organised to promote their message, and it was a great opportunity to see just how great ’slow food’ can be as well as pick up a few last minute presents.
