Yep, Covent Garden’s Night Market is on for every Thursday (4pm-10pm) and Friday (12pm-9:00pm) this month (so, ya got this week and next to check it out). Londonist made it over there on Friday, and we were actually impressed by the range of yummy goodies available for purchase.

Three Times More Gujarati Rasoi Goodness at Exmouth Market!!!

Just a quick note to let folks know that one of the yummiest meals I've ever had (Gujarati Rasoi's samosa chatt) is now available at Exmouth Market on Wednesdays and Thursdays in addition to their mainstay Friday street vending. Rejoice! (I reckon they're still on at Broadway Market on Saturdays too, but I haven't been round there in quite awhile.)

As leaving Borough Market on a busy Saturday afternoon, I overheard the following comment announced in a distinctly North American accent to a group of twenty-somethings coming into the market:

It's worth coming here for the smells alone!

Great day out in Hackney

This past Saturday, Emiana and I headed east to Hackney's Broadway Market for a stroll in the sun. I was happy to see Exmouth Market faves Gujarati Rasoi and Jollif Pot, as well as other recognizable venders on the street. After a spot of lunch, we roamed around admiring the grafitti and urban landscape until we (quite accidently) came upon a landscape of quite a different sort, Hackney City Farm. Great way to spend a Saturday afternoon. Hope to do it again soon.

How was the Frost Fair?

Emiana and I took a stroll through the Frost Fair last night, had mulled wine, heard some nice tunes. Nothing extraordinary but with all the fairy lights and festive atmosphere it was kind of nice.

Frost Fair 2006

This weekend's Frost Fair - London’s largest free winter event - will be held outside the Tate Modern and Shakespeare's Globe. This will be Southwark Council’s fourth Frost Fair along the Thames.

Festivities include:
Husky Dog Sledding
Thames Cutters Boat procession
Adult and children workshops in Mongolian yurts

Other attractions include ice sculpting, a winter market with 40 stalls selling food and gifts, street entertainment, bands and choirs singing favourite Christmas tunes, and a beer tent selling festive food and drink, such as roasted chestnuts and mulled wine.

Camden Passage Christmas Open Evening

Exceptionally delicious regional Indian food at Exmouth Market

Ever since the recent return of a Friday/Saturday street market to Exmouth Market (giving this street's name some meaning), forgaging for yummies in Clerkenwell has markedly improved (and it wasn't bad to begin with). Among the savories available at the street market is Gujarati Rasoi's "100% Authentic Vegetarian Gujarati Food." The idea behind Gujarati Rasoi is "to present food that is authentic, a true taste of Indian food from Gujarat ... As we say to our customers, Its exactly what we eat at home."

Soon after my first bite, I became an avid fan and am now a lunchtime regular. In particular, I've come to love their Samosa Chatt, which consists of the following:

One samosa served combined with delicious chick pea & potato sakh dressed with sev momra, chopped coriander, onions and two chutneys (date and tamerind), sweet and sour yoghurt, and coriander - fresh and cooling.

Not only is the Samosa Chatt delicious, it's also one of the most filling meals I've ever had. I can eat one of these for a late breakfast/early lunch and not even think about food until well into the evening. Very impressive considering the Samosa Chatt is under £5!














The Exmouth Market street market is every Friday from 11am - 6pm and every Saturday from 9am - 4pm.

Gujarati Rasoi vends at Exmouth Market on Fridays and most Saturdays. According to their website, they also vend at Broadway Market in Hackney and are available to cater events and private parties.

Stony Street Cafe

Just a stone's throw from a couple of Starbucks and the other big name establishments squeezed between Southwark Bridge and London Bridge is a homey little reprieve - the Stony Street Cafe. On Stony Street (duh) across from Borough Market, this bakery/cafe/sandwich shop with its large wooden tables and view of the market is a topnotch spot for contemplation over a cuppa. The staff is exceptionally friendly - if somewhat lackadaisical - and the place exudes an overall feeling of bucolic calm ... on a weekday morning anyway. With the Saturday market on, however, I can only imagine this cafe would be brimming with patrons.

I can vouch that their bacon sandwich really hits the spot and that their soups look and smell very appetizing.
